Thriving Between The Lines
Join me, life coach Leslie Crudup Villagarcia and my ever inquisitive co-host, Meka, as we examine personal development books through the lens of intersectionality, making self help content more accessible and relatable.
What is intersectionality?
According to Dr. Kimberlé Crenshaw, who coined the term in 1989, "Intersectionality is a metaphor for understanding the ways that multiple forms of inequality or disadvantage sometimes compound themselves and create obstacles that often are not understood among conventional ways of thinking."
So, why did we create this podcast?
Because the personal development/self help/wellness/success world often erases the lived experiences of people from marginalised communities. The truth is that privilege often plays a huge part in a person's success, but do mainstream books admit to this?....Rarely. That's why we're here to extract the gems hidden within the content. To reframe relevant information from these books in a way that will allow us ALL to live well, regardless of race, sexuality, gender identity, neurodiversity, or socioeconomic status!
In other words, we're not just reading between the lines, we're Thriving Between the Lines!

Thriving Between The Lines
Chapter 8: Girl, Wash Your Face, by Rachel Hollis | Ummmm, are you relatable or #relatable?
In this episode, we dive into the 2018 New York Times Bestseller 'Girl, Wash Your Face" by Rachel Hollis.
Rachel Hollis built her brand on a platform of being super 'relatable'.....until it stopped working for her. Join us as we examine some key themes in this book through the lens of intersectionality. Some of our questions:
- What is the difference between being relatable and being #relatable?
- How does toxic positivity manifest in conversations about diversity (and should people just Google stuff instead of overburdening their 'diverse' friends with questions all the dang time)?
- How can a person be body positive and fatphobic all at once?
- Is adoption always compassionate? (spoiler: its not)
Hollis-bashing has been done to death, so we've really tried our best to focus mainly on the content of the book, rather than the whole Hollis....situation. So how'd we do?
Drop us a message and let us know! Any books you want us to discuss? Tell us about those too.
Kindest regards,
Leslie and Meka
